Notes
After the grouping the LNER adopted a standard colour of grey for most wagons. Those fitted with vacuum brakes or pipes were painted red oxide, while refrigerated wagons were painted white. On wagons with wooden underframes the body colour extended onto the solebars, but all below was black. On wagons with steel underframes, the solebars too were black.
Initially, the tare weight of the wagon was marked on the solebar, usually to the right of centre. After the new reduced size body lettering layout was adopted in 1936, the tare weight marking moved to the lower right corner of the body.
Likewise, wagons fitted with vacuum brakes had their wheelbase initially marked on the solebar, usually at the right-hand end. After 1936 the wheelbase was usually located in the bottom right corner of the body, above the tare weight and below any "XP" mark.
Wagons were marked with dates of last painting and lifting (major overhaul), grouped together to the left of the right-hand axle. These markings were often painted above the tare weight, before that was moved to the body.
From late 1930, the district number to which the wagon was allocated was also marked on the solebars, near the right-hand wheel. After the tare weight was moved in 1936, the district number and paint and lift markings were often positioned together.
The date on which the axlebox oil was last checked was also recorded on the solebars, over the right-hand axle. The format of this information varied somewhat, but generally consisted of a grey rectangle for chalk markings, with painted prompts for the date and district or station numbers where the check took place. The format of the actual chalk markings obviously varied considerably.
The range of district and station codes used by the LNER is not known. "NE74" often appears in official photos of newly built wagons, so probably corresponds to one of the major works, Darlington perhaps. There were undoubtedly others; if anyone has authoritative information I'll gladly publish it here, please contact me with details.
