Notes

Under British Railways, most, if not all, wagons built for BR or for the former grouping era companies were fitted with plates identifying the running number of the wagon. For those wagons built for BR, the plates usually also included the rated load weight of the wagon, the BR works or other independent company that built the wagon, the year of manufacture, and the Lot (order) Number under which the wagon was built.

Those wagons built for the former grouping era companies generally retained their existing number plates, but the initials of the former company were painted out, except for the letter corresponding to the new BR region (i.e. M, N, S or W).

Former private owner wagons taken into BR ownership generally did not have numberplates, and new plates were not fitted.
