Notes

The standard colour for wagon solebars under British Railways (and later British Rail) was black. On some wagons, there was insufficient space on the body for the standard wheelbase and tare weight markings, so they were applied to the solebar instead.

Under British Railways the dates when a wagon was last painted and subjected to major maintenance (lifting) were recorded on the solebar, either individually or in groups. The grouped form was generally located at the left-hand end on each side. If not located adjacent to the vacuum release star, the date of the last vacuum brake test could also be located spearately, or grouped with the paint and lift dates.

The dates were usually follwed by the 4-digit code of the works or depot where the operation took place, separated from the date with a "/". Known codes include:

2001 Derby 2033 Wolverton 2065 Horwich
3000 Swindon 4015 Eastleigh 5459 Doncaster
6005 York 7076 Glasgow

There were undoubtedly others; if anyone has authoritative information I'll gladly add them to this list, please contact me with details.

On many wagons the date on which the axlebox oil was last checked was also recorded. The format of this information does not appear to have been standardised, and generally followed the form used by the former grouping era company. This generally consisted of a black or grey rectangle for chalk markings, with painted prompts for the date and station or district where the check took place. The format of the actual chalk markings obviously varied considerably.

With the arrival of the new British Rail corporate image around 1964, all maintenance information on wagons was moved to a standardised table painted on the wagon body, usually towards the lower right-hand corner.
